A flexible measuring tape (or a string and a ruler)

Your clean and dry bottle, jar, or tube.

Place your container upright on a flat surface.
Position the measuring tape from the bottom of the bottle up to the base of the cap (excluding rounded areas).
Note the usable height — this is your label area.
Wrap the measuring tape around the bottle or jar.
Record the measurement where the tape meets.
This is the maximum label width.
(You usually subtract 0.25 to 0.5 in to avoid overlap.)
